Vape Guide

Q). What is vaping?

  • Vaping is the act of consuming a liquid with nicotine along with added flavouring, VG (Vegetable Glycerine), PG (Propylene Glycol) from a device which heats the liquid to produce vapour rather than smoke. The first vape or e cigarette was invented by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003, who himself was a heavy smoker and was hell-bent on creating an alternative after his father had died of lung cancer.

Q). Is there a difference between e-cigarettes, vaping/vape, e hookah, or e shisha?

  • No, there is no difference between them. They all mean the same thing.

Q). Are vapes or e cigarettes different from heat-not-burn?

  • If you ask Phillip Morris if heat not burn is the same as e cigarettes or vapes, they proudly claim that they are not the same. However, the concept is very similar. Instead of combustion, the substance (tobacco in case of heat not burn and e liquid in case of vapes) is heated to produce vapour that contains nicotine which satisfies the urge of an adult smoker/vaper.

Q). Are e-cigarettes/vaping safer than tobacco cigarettes?

  • It is widely believed that vaping is far less harmful than conventional tobacco cigarettes. That is not saying that vaping is harmless, however in comparison to cigarettes, vaping is relatively less harmful. As per Public Health England, vaping is 95% less harmful than combustible cigarettes.

Q). Which vape product can I choose as a first?

  • As a new switcher from cigarettes to e cigarettes, one can choose an easy to use product like the disposables or the JUUL. If you straight away start with typical vape pens (with refillable liquids and changeable coils) or box mods (with direct-to-lung vaping), then it may get a bit too complicated. Better to start with a mouth-to-lung simple device in which the drag is similar to that of tobacco cigarettes.

Q). What is the shelf life of e-liquids and e-cigarettes?

  • Typically speaking, e cigarettes are good to go until the battery drains off completely. It maybe 3-5 years roughly. E liquids are usually best before 2 years from the date of manufacturing. If you see a change in colour of the e liquid (i.e. the colour becoming a darker shade of the original colour), then it would be best to not vape that e juice.

Q). How expensive will be vaping?

  • It is widely believed that vaping is less expensive that smoking, and it is true on average when one talks about the western countries like USA and UK. However, in Asian (including Bangladesh) and Middle Eastern countries it may or may not be true. It also depends on the frequency of vaping and the kind of brand one is vaping. Standard frequency of vaping of a brand like Yuoto will be cheaper, but heavy (all-day) vaping of JUUL is bound to be way more expensive.

Q). What does the medical field say about vaping?

  • There is hardly any field or category where the medical field is so divided in their opinion. On one hand we have established medical professionals and medical/health bodies like Public Health England (national health division of United Kingdom which is one of the most credible entities) stating that vaping is 95% less harmful than conventional cigarettes, and on the other hand we have medical professionals from developing countries like India and Uruguay who are simply against the idea of e cigarettes and tobacco harm reduction.

Q). Is it safe to buy e-cigarettes from a local tobacco/shisha/paan shop?

  • It can be safe to do so; however, it can be risky as well since there are a lot of cases of counterfeits/fakes being sold in such places. These fakes contain substandard batteries and e liquid ingredients, making them possibly deadly for consumption. It is always recommended to buy from a trustworthy vape store such as Vape Stop, which is currently present in 3 countries and has been in the market of e cigarettes since 7+ years.

Q). Can I carry vapes on flight in Bangladesh?

  • One can carry e cigarettes or vapes on flight in hand luggage, and not check-in luggage. This is because since e cigarettes are battery powered products, it can possibly be a fire hazard in case of fire in an unattended baggage, as per global airlines rules. If you are travelling from a country where e cigarettes are permitted into Dhaka or Chittagong, then you can carry vapes with no issues. However, if you are carrying e cigs from a country where they are banned, such as in India, then e cigs may be confiscated at the airports of those origin countries (for example at the Indian airport at the time of departure to Bangladesh).

Q). Is it permitted to vape inside a restaurant or office?

  • Bangladesh is a very inclusive and friendly country. There are people from all cultures and countries that visit places like Dhaka and Chittagong, and they all enjoy their stay in the country. If you are vaping in public, there is unlikely to be any issue and Bangladesh people are used to seeing adult people vape all the time. However, if you can vape inside a restaurant/hotel or not depends on the place itself. If one is allowed to smoke, then one is generally allowed to vape as well.
